Summary
Enlightened was a side project focused on learning the basics of Unreal Engine 4. This was done by watching and reading tutorials online, reading textbooks, and getting some advice on the Unreal Forums. These were not part of a college course and was instead a self-taught exercise. The assets used were free from the Unreal Engine marketplace: Infinity Blade III and Kite Demo.

The design was highly inspired by games from the Zelda and dark souls series, designed with a first person perspective in mind.

Development:
  • Main HUB - A large cathedral with mountains surrounded by a dark and ominous valley. The cathedral is fully accessible by the player from the interior to exterior without loading screens. The side paths contain small visual areas which were used to practice lighting techniques and landscape editing.

    Things I learned:
    1. Blueprint visual scripting.
    2. Material Editing. [Simple retexturing or material adjustments]
    3. Audio implementation (Infinity Blade and custom sounds / music).
    4.
    Landscape editing techniques and integration.
    5. Experimented with Anim Montages and Anim Blueprint (For the player camera and animations)
  • Ice Fortress Testing Zone - A small interior location used to practice the more technical aspects of UE4, along with a few level design concepts.

    Things I learned:
    1. Matinee [Moving Platform and opening / closing doors]
    2. Material Editing [Created Panning textures and adjustable alpha snow]
    3. Blueprint visual scripting and Timelines [Opening / closing doors with text prompt and collecting objects]
    4. Particle Effects [Snow falling, Dust, and a Magical Beam]
    5. Experimented with character perspectives [1st person viewable body]
    6. Object Physics Configuration [Pushing Block and slippery floors]
